Plakatstil (poster design)

Plakatstil (poster design in German)
This was an early poster style which originated out of Germany in the early 1900’s. It was started by Berliner Lucian Bernhard in 1906. The traits of this style of art are usually bold eye-catching lettering with flat colours. Shapes and objects are simplified while there is a central image which is the focus of the poster.

Constructivism 1919 -1930’s
Constructivism was an artistic and architectural that originated in Russia from the beginning of the 1920’s, a rejection of the idea of autonomous art. The movement was in favour of art as a practice for social purposes. Constructivism had a great effect on modern art movements of the 20th century, influencing major trends such as the De Stijl movements. Its influence was pervasive, with major impacts upon architecture, graphic and industrial design, theatre, film, dance, fashion and to some extent music.
I mainly focusing on the constructivism in art, rather than architectural movement.

Northumbria University ‘Advertising American Dream’ Lecture Dr.R.Stephens

This lecture was intentionally a history day at Northumbria University (In the North East of England), looking at the different courses of History that is available.

Most of the Lecture focused on America’s strategies of making the economy grow, especially as World War 2 took many countries into debt after paying war reparations. The strongest economic growths in America was the production of munitions (bullets, missiles etc.) and this industry was becoming irrelevant (especially after the war in Vietnam).

To boost the American economy, America turned to ‘consumerism’, which took over the largest economy in America. One of the businesses that thrived upon this was the manufacturing of cars/automobiles which placed more pressure on the growth of advertisements. Vibrant coloured advertisements were designed to create a freedom and happiness approach to buying cars, especially to change to moods of many citizens in America (Perl Harbor). This was was proven successful, especially from the American Car Company Ford Motors US, who are the first company have over a billion dollars a year (1955).

Due to the increase of car sales the American government acted upon this to create the ‘interstate highway act’ in 1959, which is now the backbone of the system that is used in today’s highways/motorways.  The highway interstate commission that was set up was able to work with companies like Ford to spend $2.6 billion on developing the highways.

When studying the 1965 Ford Mustang commercial in the the lecture, we went in depth about the types of social movement and moods of the Ford company. – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZpebnyrdZA

new ad – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gUfN5fA-oWY

From looking at the advertisement there is a strong on amounts of gender inequality by stereotyping women being used as models, and suggesting that the main market of the Ford Mustang is men, so by using the model it ‘appears to men’ mostly. The advertisement, compared to a modern advertisement is completely different because there was no mention on fuel efficiency, safety and speed it mostly focuses on the look of the car. There is a difference as well in the use of social media being used, which shows a change in designing advertisements (using hash-tags)

How Has Car Advertisements Evolved From 1900 Till Present Day? – Artist Research

To help me with my research and observational studies I have looked at Lee Friedlanders who has took photographs through car windows and mirrors.
From the Fraenkel Gallery website- http://fraenkelgallery.com/artists/lee-friedlander

“Lee Friedlander, born in 1934, began photographing the American social landscape in 1948. With an ability to organize a vast amount of visual information in dynamic compositions, Friedlander has made humorous and poignant images among the chaos of city life, dense landscape and countless other subjects”.

Some of his work related in cars.

Linked to these photos I have created my own versions of them and have added them in my observational section of my blog –

Leaman is most famous for his family in Art illustration of ‘A Jan Steen’ A Jan Steen Kitchen 1995-6 by Jonathan Leaman born 1954
I think it is a wired illustration however it creates a story; possibly a story a story about someones family or his own family. He may portray the illustration to tell viewers about his lifestyle being crazy, just like in the illustration. Throught the exhabition this peice was my favorite as it is a buisy illustration that has depth in it.

Anthony Green
Born – 30 September 1939
Home place – Luton, Bedfordshire, England
Studied – Highgate School, London (where he was taught by Kyffin Williams) and the Slade School of Art (where he first met lifelong friend and fellow RA Ben Levene)
Green is a realist painter and printmaker. As well as producing oil paintings, he also produces a number of works designed 3d rather than on a plain canvas, bringing more depth into his illustrations which is a unique and cool.
